I want to start up a recording studio?
I need help on writing a business introduction proposal. So far I've got..I want to open up a state of the art recording studio situated in the heart of Florida.
It needs to include:
USP (unique selling point) my unique selling point is it will be a hip-hop type studio and most hip-hop studios don't have drums so I'll have live instruments. My target market would be I the low level consumer. I'll have vintage microphones, MPC etc...
How I'm going to achieve my goal
Time, how long would it take me.

I own and operate a commercial studio in Phoenix that is similar to the one you wish to open and this is my 10th year in business so I'm well qualified to answer your question. Lets begins by me asking you some questions.
1. budget. A big part of your business plan will be related to your budget. You also have to think not only about the cost of the gear but also budget for things such as insurance, advertising, website design and hosting. We even budgeted for an interior designer to help us choose paint, carpet, plants, etc. You've got to plan for that too. What is your budget. Where would this money come from?
If you are going state of the art then your budget will start somewhere around 250K. I did a minor upgrade this year that set me back 75K. Again, that was just for some new converters, patching system and some pre's.
What will the design of your place be? Fully floated? If you are in a commercial complex with lots of traffic, consider having someone decouple your building foundation from the parking lot. Those things must be in your plan too.
2. Marketing. You've budgeted for marketing but you'll need to address the specifics of marketing. Yellow pages, website, Better Business Bureau (how will you address client complaints?), magazine ads, etc.
3. How will charge your clients to get all the money back and make a profit? State of the art studios generally charge $100/hr + . All the gear in the world wont command that kind of money unless you've got the talent to back it up. If you don't, you'll need to hire experienced engineers which will cost you money too.
4. Time line. We worked full time and it took us 7 months to do our build out. We probably could have accomplished this in half the time but we would have needed to hire a construction crew and we just couldn't budget for that. Also, finding workers that specialize in studio construction is difficult. Keep in mind, too, that we couldn't just go to walmart and buy studio furniture - we had to design and make most of our furniture. Add that to your time line.
Finally, put it all on paper, take a deep breath and decide if this project is doable. Keep in mind that this is an industry where 98% of the people involved never make a penny. Most studios go out of business within the first year.
