Bill Snyder is Back at Kansas State
Bill Snyder has just finished his first year back at Kansas State as head football coach.
He retired in 2005 after 17 seasons of mostly good years. He is now back to coach the Wildcats. Krause said, "One of the most important factors in identifying the right person to take over this football program was to find a person who has been a successful head coach and best understands the culture and tradition of Kansas State. No one understands that more than Coach Snyder, and we are excited to be announcing him as our head coach today."
He was named the 32nd head football coach in 1988 at Kansas State. He has won twice as many games as he has lost. He has a Kansas State coaching record of 136-68-1. Of that record, he had a 75-53-1 record in Big 8 and Big 12 games. Kansas State wanted him to return to the head coaching position because of his many wins. He has won 136 games and that is more than triple the next winningest man in K-State history (Mike Ahearn with 39 victories).
Snyder turned around the Kansas State football team. When he was hired, the team had lost 26 games in a row and had 1 no decision game. It took them 51 years to win 130 games. The 12 head coaches that came before Snyder only managed to win 116 games in the time span of 1945 through 1988.
Snyder took Kansas State to 11 bowl games in a row between 1993 and 2003. Kansas State was one of seven schools to make the postseason every year during that time span. During those 11 years, they won about 80 percent of their games. They had the second highest win percent over that time too.
Kansas State had some big wins in that time span. In the 2003 Big 12 Championship game, K-State beat heavily favored Oklahoma 35-7. That win secured their spot in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, which was their first time making it that far.
In 2003, Kansas State had an 11-4 record. They were the only team to win 11 games in six of seven years. They were also the second team in college football history to win 11 games six times in seven years.
His unprecedented success as coach was not unnoticed. Three times he was named the National Coach of the Year. Twice he has been a finalist for the Bear Bryant award before we won it the third time he was nominated for it.
Every since the birth of the Big 12 Conference, Kansas State has been a force to be reckoned with. They ranked in the top three in overall Big 12 wins. Kansas State was a good road team, winning more Big 12 road games than the other teams in the conference.
That is enough for any management to bring out the big bucks to bring a coach back. He is one of the best coaches in college football today.
There are many other things that Snyder and his team have accomplished during his time as coach.
Kansas State fans remember the 2003 season. It seemed as if all hope was gone. The Wildcats overcame many obstacles as they made a comeback. That year they were ranked as high as No. 6 in early polls but quickly fell out after quarterback Eli Roberson got injured. Those three losses seemed to eliminate them from the Big 12 title game. Snyder was not about to let his team give up hope on their goal. He told his team if they could go 1-0 each week, then they could surprise critics and achieve their goals. They did that and they ended up playing in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. No matter how many injuries you have, if you are willing to work hard to achieve your goals, you can reach them.
