Aussie swimwear hits the small screen big time
Australians are getting larger, according to research, but have clothing manufacturers recognised this trend .
For four years, contestants on the Australian version of "The Biggest Loser" have stepped onto the scales wearing black shorts and crop tops.But organisers were faced with a challenge of their own - they couldn't find plus size swimwear and activewear, until they found Perth-based Viva Swimwear, on the internet.
They were the only swimwear manufacturer who made swimwear in sizes greater than 32, and who were able to supply custom-made activewear and swimwear in larger sizes.And four years later, Viva Swimwear is still supplying contestants on "The Biggest Loser" with swimwear and activewear, proof that even for pluz-size wearers, functional is fashionable.
Viva Swimwear's founder, Julie Wiggins, is proud of the endorsement from 'The Biggest Loser' but adds that her company's over-riding philosophy is to provide quality swimwear for women of all shapes and sizes. “Swimwear is a confidence garment, so it must look good and importantly, the wearer must feel great,” she says.
Because the bulk of Viva Swimwear's manufacturing is done locally using fabrics sources overseas, the company was able to quickly turnaround the custom-designed swimwear and clothing for "the Biggest Loser" show."As the kilos came off, we had to work quickly to manufacture new clothing to fit the contestants' changing shape!,” Julie said.
Viva Swimwear doesn’t only manufacture plus size swimwear, but caters for children and men and women of All Sizes and shapes.Products range from chlorine-resistant swimwear, to a wide range of swimwear, cover-ups, rash tops and shorts for men, women, children and babies.
But supplying swimwear for the larger person is a niche market that Julie has captured, both in Perth where there are two retail outlets as well as throughout Australia via the website.There has been a growing demand for plus size swimwear according to Julie, which in line with figures that show that Australians are gaining weight.
Compared to a 1980 study which found that 25% of the population was overweight, the 1999-2000 Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifesstyle Study showed that 60% - 7 million adults aged 25 years or older - were overweight.62% of the population was shown to be either overweight or obese according to another recent study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for the 2007-2008 National Heallth Survey which sampled 22 000 peopl. But are clothing manufacturers keeping up with this trend ?
