Can you give me more examples of colloquial second person plural expressions in English?
My amateur understanding is that at one time, 2nd person plural and 2nd person singular were two different expressions: "you" and "thou", respectively. However, "you" came to be used in the cases of both 2nd person plural AND singular, and thou fell into disuse (not sure when this was).
However, there seems to be a deep-seated need on the part of English speakers to invent new colloquial second person plural expressions to be able to distinguish between second person plural and second person plural. Over the years, I have noticed that the following 2nd person plural expressions:
you-all or y'all: southern US
youse: New York City
youse guys: New Jersey
you guys: Western US
yuz: Baltimore
yunze: Western PA
and in fact now in Western PA, "yunze" is sometimes used for second person singular as well, so a new colloquial expression, "yunzes" has been invented to replace "yunze" for second person plural.
Does anyone know of any other similar expressions? Any comments?
Another fun one that was replaced y'all in western PA and eastern Ohio is "all y'all." I love it when people say it.
