Latest Technologies Make Setting Up Home Theater Kits A Snap
Setting up multi-channel audio such as a home theater system has always been quite complex and vendors lately have developed unique products and technologies like wireless speaker kit products or virtual surround sound to help simplify this procedure. I will look at the most recent trends to find out which devices actually work. I will also give some guidance for selecting the best components.
While in the past installing a TV has been rather easy, the emergence of multi-channel sound has made installing home theater systems a great deal more difficult by requiring a number of external speakers to create surround sound. In case of 5.1 surround, 6 speakers are utilized: center, left and right front, left and right rear and a subwoofer. Newer 7.1 systems require a total amount of 8 loudspeakers by adding 2 additional side speakers.
As a result, home theater setups have become pretty difficult. Running cables to remote loudspeakers also is often undesirable due to aesthetic reasons. Some technologies have emerged to simplify this procedure.
One option is reducing the number of loudspeakers by making virtual speakers. This method applies signal processing to the audio and adds phase shifts and cues to the audio that would normally be broadcast through the remote speaker. The signal processing is designed based on how the human hearing determines the location of a sound. The sound signal is then sent by the front loudspeakers. The signal processing has an effect that will deceive the listener into presuming that the sound is coming from an alternate position.
Virtual surround eliminates the remote speakers and simplifies the setup and also eliminates long speaker cord runs. Then again, it also has a disadvantage. The shape of each human's ear is somewhat different. Thus everybody processes sound in a different way. Because the signal processing is based on a standard human ear model, virtual surround will not work equally well for every person depending on how much the viewer varies from the standard model.
Wireless surround sound products are an additional option for simplifying home speaker setups and normally include a transmitter component which connects to the source and in addition wireless amplifiers which will connect to the remote speakers. The transmitter will often have amplified speaker inputs in addition to line-level inputs and have a volume control to adjust it to the source audio level.
A few wireless kits come with wireless amplifiers that connect to two loudspeakers. This still requires cord runs between the two speakers. Other products come with separate wireless amplifiers for every speaker. Entry-level wireless products utilize FM broadcast or audio compression which will degrade the audio quality to some extent. More sophisticated wireless kits utilize uncompressed digital audio broadcast. Make sure that you pick a wireless system with a low audio latency, at most a few milliseconds. This will ensure that the audio from all loudspeakers, including the non-wireless speakers, is in sync. Low latency is also important for good sync with the video. Otherwise there will be a noticeable echo type effect. A few wireless systems operate at 5.8 GHz which offers the benefit of less competition from other wireless products than products utilizing the crowded 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz frequency band.
A third technology utilizes side-reflecting speakers. This solution is referred to as sound bars. There are extra speakers located at the front which broadcast the audio for the remote speakers from the front at an angle. The sound is then reflected by walls and seems to be originating from besides or behind the viewer. The result heavily is dependent upon the interior, particularly the shape of the room and the decoration. It will function well for square rooms with no obstacles and sound reflecting walls. On the other hand, realistic scenarios frequently will be different from this ideal and diminish the effect of this solution.
