What Messages Do Our Clothes Convey?
Sometimes, you hear people saying that fashion should not matter, that it is shallow or materialistic. Some people think that by putting little or no thought into their appearance, they are eschewing the trap of consumerism. But the truth is, although no one should feel obligated to conform to current fashion trends, we cannot escape the fact that the way we dress sends certain messages to the people who see us during the day.
Sometimes, an outfit indicates that a person belongs to a certain subculture. Think about it. If you see someone walking down the street in a leather jacket, a black helmet, and motorcycle boots, you are going to make certain assumptions about that person's lifestyle. You are going to assume that they ride a bike and that they identify with motorcycle culture. And if you see someone with a mohawk, a denim jacket covered in patches, and combat boots, you will assume that they identify with punk rock culture. That is the image that their outfit conveys to the rest of society.
Sometimes our clothes indicate an interest in certain types of music. If you see a woman dressed in brown boots with jeans tucked into them, a denim jacket with fringe, and a cowboy hat, you are probably going to assume that she likes country music. And if you see a guy dressed in a white t-shirt, baggy jeans that sag, and a a pair of high-top sneakers, you probably assume that he likes hip-hop.
Sometimes, a message is sent through the things we refuse to wear. Since vegans shun anything contrived from animal products, they would not wear any type of leather or fur. A vegan would not wear a leather watch or a sweater made from rabbit hair.
We cannot get away from the fact that our clothes send certain signals. If you wear only neutral colors and clothes that are baggy and hide your shape, it sends the message that you want to hide in some way. People may assume that you are uncomfortable with your body, or that you simply want to avoid drawing any kind of attention to yourself. When you are getting dressed, take a look in the mirror, and ask yourself the following questions.
What does my outfit say to the world?
Is this the message that I really want to convey?
The bottom line is, you want your clothes to convey truthful things about you. We all have unique qualities that we can display through fashion. You should not feel limited by the latest styles or the articles in magazines. Think of your clothes as a form of art. Choose things that make you feel good. Wear colors that will make you happy if you catch a look at your reflection later in the day. If you dress in a way that truly shows who you are, chances are people will respond to you in a much more positive manner.
