Balancing Redox in Basic Conditions?
The reaction of manganese dioxide with oxygen to produce green manganate ion (not permanganate ion) and water. Do this in basic conditions.
Skeletal reaction: MnO2(s) + O2(g) → MnO4^2¯(aq) + H2O(l)
Please show all steps if possible because I'm getting stuck half way through the working out.
MnO2 + 1/2 O2 + 2 OH^(-) ----> MnO4 ^(2-) + H2O
Balance the two hydrogen atoms with 2 OH.
Balance out oxygen on both sides with 1/2 O2.
So, on the left you have 4 atoms of oxygen which have -2 and one oxygen atom with zero charge.
Mn is oxydized from 4+ to 6+, the oxygen gets the electrons, so on the right you have 4+1=5 atoms of Oxygen which have 2-
