Police protection? About time Police had some!?
When you read the news its always this officer got killed, that officer got killed. Then when you look at our officers' would you want to be a cop? You touch someone too hard you get your ass sued to hell and go inside for a longer stretch! You convict someone they get a either a slap on the wrist or prison with PS3, luxury 4 poster bed, silk sheets with hot milk n cookies every night. *I thought prison was supposed to be punishment?*
Then you look at it and what do police have? A stick, a white shirt, perhaps some pepper and thats it? So what use is it then against 20 tooled up youths? Or even a single person with a knife or other close combat weapon? Remember you have but one chance, an indirect hit or a lucky swing and your done for! I believe police at least everyday be given flack jackets and a good old Glock. Given terrorists, youth gangs, easy guns I'd surely want at least this! Why can't our government learn? Do you want to be a cop under this environment?

Yes I agree with you that the whole justice system is in favour of the offender, with poor sentences, slack prisons and little deterrant.
Despite this I still have faith in the system to protect me. If I shoot someone then I will be doing this for a dam good reason. This will be to protect the life of a member of the public, a colleagues or my own. We do not shoot to kill, but shoot to stop. The aim is to prevent the threat to life by shooting at the centre of body mass. I do not take shooting someone lightly and it is a last resort. Other methods must have been tried and failed or unlikely to succeed in the circumstances. By this I mean - Verbal comms, tac comms, open handed skills, gas, baton, Taser, baton gun, passive attack dog.
The police are looking at some time in the future rolling out Taser to all response officers.
It doesn't matter how well you do the job, and how lawful you act, beacause there are plenty of people out there who will still slate you, despite not having the faintest clue what the circumstances were.
Missdiddy - I echo you comments. The officer on Monday gave his life trying to protect others, like countless officers do everday without a second thought. My sympathies go to his family and colleagues.
