A Bryson Middle School eighth-grader was arrested and suspended from school after he wore a T-shirt to school Thursday with a KKK symbol on it.

The student showed up to lunch with two shirts on and briefly lifted his top shirt to reveal a white T-shirt with the symbol, slogan and picture of a noose on it. The shirt “caused a tremendous amount of disruption in the cafeteria,” an incident report stated.

The student was immediately suspended from school and recommended for expulsion, the report said.

Later in the day, students passed notes saying some were planning to wear similar shirts today. Principal Phillip Davie addressed the involved students yesterday.

The Liberty Legal Institute on Tuesday announced that it was suing the Waxahachie Independent School District on behalf of Pete Palmer and his parents.

According to an institute representative, the district violated Palmer’s constitutional right to free speech when it sent him home from school in October for wearing the shirt, threatening him with suspension if he did so again.

An 80-year-old church deacon was removed from the Smith Haven Mall yesterday in a wheelchair and arrested by police for refusing to remove a T-shirt protesting the Iraq War.

Police said that Don Zirkel, of Bethpage, was disturbing shoppers at the Lake Grove mall with his T-shirt, which had what they described as "graphic anti-war images." Zirkel, a deacon at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, said his shirt had the death tolls of American military personnel and Iraqis - 4,000 and 1 million - and the words "Dead" and "Enough." The shirt also has three blotches resembling blood splatters.

A Conyers man may continue criticizing Wal-Mart with parodies on T-shirts that compare the retail giant to the Holocaust and al-Qaida terrorists, a federal judge has ruled.
Timothy Batten in Atlanta ruled that Charles Smith may maintain his Web sites, www.walocaust.com and www.walqaeda.com. Smith also may continue to sell novelty, satirical merchandise that criticizes the company, the judge said.

"It’s great," Smith, 50, from Conyers, said Tuesday about the ruling. "I’m relieved. Whenever you go into litigation against such a big company, you never know the outcome."

"This is a resounding victory for First Amendment rights and sends a clear message to big corporations that would try to use their deep pockets to intimidate and silence their critics," said one of Smith’s attorneys, Paul Alan Levy of Public Citizen.

The Serbian gold medal-winner, Milorad Cavic, has been banned from further individual events at the European swimming championships for wearing a T-shirt with a political slogan. Serbia’s swimming federation was fined €7,000 (£5,453) after Cavic breached competition rules during his 50m butterfly-victory ceremony earlier this week, the European swimming’s governing body, LEN, said.

Cavic, based in the United States, wore the T-shirt bearing the words "Kosovo is Serbia" in his own language on Wednesday after breaking the European 50 butterfly record for the second time in two days to win Serbia’s first European swimming title. Serbia are not due to swim the two remaining men’s relays, so he is effectively out of the championships.

By Matt Koesters

When Bradley Tucker, 25, arrived to vote at his polling location in Mt. Healthy early Tuesday, March 4, he was ready to support his candidate. Tucker showed his support by wearing a Barack Obama campaign sweatshirt and a matching button. He was ready to vote.

He wasn’t ready to be confronted by a poll worker for his choice of clothing.

"When he came up to me, I was kind of surprised, because I had never dealt with this question while voting," said Mr. Tucker. "I could see if I was standing in line, chanting ‘Obama,’ but I was just standing there waiting my turn and not speaking to anyone."

Mr. Tucker said a poll worker at the Lakeknoll Drive polling location instructed him to cease campaigning and informed him he would have to remove his sweatshirt prior to being allowed to cast his ballot. Mr. Tucker said he was not campaigning and refused to take off his sweatshirt, and was eventually permitted to vote by another poll worker without having to change his attire.

If you’ve wearing a Hillary Clinton T-shirt or a Barack Obama button, you’ll probably be told to cover it up before voting in Montgomery County, said Steve Harsman, director of the county Board of Elections.

With the original First Amendment "Freedom of Speech" looking on, admirers of the U.S. Constitution in the Washington D.C. National Archives Building today were ordered to leave for wearing tee-shirts reading "Impeach Bush and Cheney." Many of the tourist-activists were in town to hail the arrival of impeachment marcher John Nirenberg, the 61 year-old college professor who has just walked from Boston to D.C. to call attention to the need for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

In a telephone interview, one of the participants, Susan Serpa, age 56, told me she was looking at the displays when a female security guard approached her and said "You need to go speak to that man over there" indicating a burly security guard. When Serpa asked why, the woman said: "Your shirt." Serpa’s shirt reads on the front: "Impeach Bush and Cheney, Change History." On the reverse it says: "MaineImpeach.org."

As reported by the BBC, 10 year old Sam Rodwell, from Dorest UK, was asked to change his T-Shirt that read "Autism - It’s No Mystery, It’s Mercury", while at school one day. Sam is one of 64 students at Portfield School in Poole, a specialized school for Autistic children run by The Wessex Autistic Society. His T-shirt declares the common criticism that Autism has a link to the Mercury content in preservatives used in vaccines.

Sam’s father told the BBC, "Sam wears that T-shirt because he is mercury tested. We have had him tested and he does have mercury toxicity." Sam would have been wearing the T-Shirt on an outing for the children to a playground and the school informed his mother that he would have to change his T-shirt or wouldn’t be allowed to attend. The Wessex Autistic Society chief executive, Bob Lowndes felt the T-Shirt would have drawn unnecessary attention to the children’s condition. The staff at Portfield School also told Sam’s father, David Rodwell, that wearing the T-shirt was politically incorrect.

Rodwell said that after the staff replaced the T-shirt, "(Sam) was very upset. It’s political correctness gone mad. Who is to decide what is politically correct and what isn’t?" Mr. Rodwell also mentioned that removing the T-shirt was inconsistent with the school’s policy, as Sam has wore similar shirts in the past.

You can see the T-shirt which the National Autism Association has for sale on their website: www.nationalautismassociation.org

"Bush Lied…They Died" reads a T-shirt sold by Dan Frazier out of Flagstaff, Arizona. The T-shirt lists over 3,000 names of fallen U.S soldiers in Iraq as a protest of the war. The T-shirts, among other paraphernalia, have recently come under scrutiny in several states including, Louisiana and Oklahoma, where a ban was passed on using the name of fallen U.S. Soldiers for commercial purposes. Florida and Texas have similar bans in the form of legislation waiting to be past, and now Arizona is considering such legislation.

The main opposition to such bans is a question of constitutional rights as Freedom of Speech, but in the case of Frazier’s Anti-War T-Shirts, it can be considered commercial speech, which is not entirely protected by 1st Amendment Rights, and subject to state regulation. Others have argued that use of the names is in public record and can be used in Plays, performances and articles, which may also generate commercial income. Some feel that placing the ban for use on commercial products like T-Shirts would undermine this allowance of public record. An Arizona State University Law Professor, Paul Bender, says that in the case of Frazier, he is not selling anything on the T-Shirt and is only making a political statement. The legislation in each state was largely influenced by the families of the fallen soldiers, who see a certain amount of disrespect in their loved ones’ names being used on Anti-War paraphernalia. Members of the families have said that their loved ones’ names should not be used to promote a political statement they might not have agreed with.

The legislation in Arizona would impose a fine of up to $2,500 on individuals and $20,000 on enterprises, along with 6 months jail time. It would also allow military families the right to sue over the use of their loved ones’ names without permission. The Florida legislation would only impose a $1,000 fine on commercial use of the Soldiers’ names without permission on items like T-Shirts.

While no prosecutions have been made in Louisiana and Oklahoma, a great deal of attention has been placed on Frazier’s possible case in Arizona, as a Phoenix area mother plans to sue him over use of her son’s name if the bill passes. The bills not only cover the use of names on T-shirts, but also photos of the soldiers used without permission. Congressional representatives in Texas, Florida and Arizona still have yet to decided whether or not to pass the ban and have made little indication of how they will decide.

Though illegal in two states, Frazier is still selling the Anti-War T-Shirts on his website, www.carryabigsticker.com

If you lived though rock’s golden age and all you got was that lousy Genesis T-shirt, don’t despair: you could be the owner of a valuable cultural artefact. Paul Morley remembers the time when merchandising actually meant something

As you slip into your favourite Sunday T-shirt, consider how much history is pressed into the garment and how much the image, logo or slogan that is, or isn’t, on the front, explains about your age, sex and cultural preferences.

You are dressing yourself in history and opening yourself up to interpretation. T-shirts as we know them - basic T-shaped undershirts that became over-garments once teenage fashion kicked in after the Second World War, took their shape in the late 19th century.

Legend has it that sailors, about to be inspected by Queen Victoria, were ordered to add sleeves to their working vests so that she would not have to face their hairy armpits.

By 1913, American sailors were wearing something that resembled our idea of a T-shirt underneath their itchy uniforms. At the end of the 1920s, the word ‘T-shirt’, already used by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his novel This Side of Paradise, made it into Webster’s Dictionary. Souvenir T-shirts promoting The Wizard of Oz in 1939 became instant collector’s items.

I could feel the man behind the pro shop desk eyeing me the moment I walked through the Aspen Golf Club doors.

I went through a checklist in my head. My fly is zipped. The barbecue stain on my left trouser leg is barely noticeable. My shoes match. I’m ready to hit the driving range.

As the man handed me my credit card and two tokens, he paused for a moment, then spoke.

"If you don’t wear a collared shirt next time, you won’t be allowed on the range," he said.

I was apologetic and a bit red in the face. Apparently my unnassuming, plain gray long-sleeved crewneck shirt proclaimed my egregious lack of respect for the sanctity of the game and my fellow golfers. (I can only imagine how he would’ve reacted had I worn my mesh tank top.)

I came to my senses, however, as I passed a man wearing Wranglers and a Hawaiian shirt standing over a 10-footer on the practice green. OK, so he had a collar - the major prerequisite - but he looked like he was dressed for closing day at Aspen Highlands.

I, on the other hand, looked like I had just come from communion. It wasn’t as if I was wearing a Led Zeppelin T-shirt with a cigarette burn on the sleeve or footy pajamas. The outfit, one of my finest, could’ve passed the discriminating taste of my grandfather, who routinely spends entire homilies pointing out the heathens in the first row wearing dungarees.

BERKELEY — A happy ending to an ugly shirt.
What started as a painful confrontation over offensive merchandise from a San Leandro supplier was settled harmoniously this week by management and consumers.

When Brandelyn Castine strolled into the three-level Futura across from the University of California, Berkeley campus on Saturday, she was "shocked to see a T-shirt that read ‘Rutgers Nappy Headed Hoes Basketball Team’ complete with a picture of a basketball with an Afro and an Afro pick."

The T-shirt comes on the heels of radio talk show host Don Imus referring to the Rutgers women’s basketball team as "nappy headed hos." The ensuing outcry led to his dismissal.

After a boycott of the Futura store’s products and a protest rally at the site, manager Jonathan Fernandez, Castine and her supporters reached an agreement this week about the future of merchandise sold at the Telegraph Avenue store.

About 70 students marched to Bear Basics yesterday, not to buy clothing, but to protest a number of T-shirts at the store that they called “offensive” and “disrespectful” to people of color.
The protest began after several students complained on Saturday about a shirt the Telegraph Avenue store carried that read “Rutgers Nappy Headed Hoes Basketball Team,” in reference to a comment made by radio host Don Imus about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team.

A manager was asked to stop selling the shirt but he refused, so students began a larger effort to have it removed, said Keyanna Hatcher, a senior and African American studies major who helped organize the rally.

Americans don’t mind poking fun at George Bush, but when it comes to royalty they get very serious.

As the Queen gets ready to kick off her first tour of the US in 16 years with a visit to Virginia, authorities there have asked people not to greet her wearing ‘I’m With Stupid’ T-shirts.

The popular range has an arrow pointing to the side to humorously insult the person next to the wearer and they fear she may be offended.

The ban has been imposed on 100 ‘commoners’ who have won places in a lottery for a front-row place during a royal walkabout. Virginia’s governor Tim Kaine says the visit will be a ‘very powerful day’ and workers have been out painting fences, installing lampposts and laying bricks and new grass.
