T-Shirt Company is in the Game

LEESBURG — T-shirt tycoon J.R. Hirschfeld and his employees will try to get as much sleep as they can before Monday’s college football title game.

When the battle between the Florida Gators and the Ohio State Buckeyes ends just before midnight, they’ll pour some coffee and fire up the silk-screening machines at TL Sportswear.

And for the next 30 hours or so, they will speedily print thousands of T-shirts announcing either the Gators or the Buckeyes as the new national champions of college football.

"The minute that game ends, it will be nonstop for us," said Hirschfeld, who owns the Leesburg company with his wife, Elaine.

But how bleary-eyed and busy Hirschfeld and his 30 employees will be depends on who wins.

If the favored Buckeyes win, Hirschfeld and his crew will print about 11,000 Buckeyes T-shirts in white, gray or red in Leesburg and another 27,000 at a printing plant in Dayton, Ohio, that Hirschfeld rented for the occasion. The finished shirts then will be loaded onto trucks and within hours shipped to department stores, college bookstores and specialty shops.

It will be an even crazier time at TL Sportswear, however, if the Gators pull off an upset win.

Hirschfeld figures he’ll print up about 35,000 T-shirts in Gator blue and orange in his first batch and then about 15,000 or more in a second wave.

All those shirts will go out to stores across the country, including Macy’s, J.C. Penney, Belk and Bealls, where delirious fans will snatch them up as memorabilia.

"You got to move quick," Hirschfeld said.

He should know. He’s been printing T-shirts and sweatshirts with school logos for college and universities since 1985. Hirschfeld and his wife started the company in a 200-square-foot office with five employees, a manual press and a contract with the University of Florida.

Make an Arrest, Get a T-Shirt

Lowering crime is a full-time job.

It’s a task that takes everyone from the patrolman stopping drunk drivers to the detective tracking fugitives. But sometimes that work goes unnoticed, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Chief Michael Berkow said Friday.

The chief hopes to encourage those good deeds through a new reward program.

"The most valuable resource I have is the men and women wearing a blue uniform," he said. "Every day and night, there are police officers out there doing good solid work."

On Friday, the chief handed out T-shirts to four officers.

He insisted it’s not about the shirt, but the meaning behind it. It’s about justice, integrity and honor, according to the logo on the shirt.

That’s why only an elite group hand-picked by Berkow will receive them.

"You can’t buy it, only earn it," Berkow told his officers at the department’s crime summit.
