Couple Turns Lemons to Lemonade with Fire-Themed T-Shirts

Need a memento of the Columbia Complex Fire? Cheri and Dan Wilson can fill the bill.

By Andy Porter of the Union-Bulletin

WAITSBURG - As the saying goes, “Where there’s smoke, there’s work.'’

And while Dan and Cheri Wilson may never have heard of the comedy troupe that coined that phrase, they would probably agree it’s not a bad motto for folks selling mementos of a major blaze.

At their roadside stand outside the growing fire camp here, the entrepreneurial couple are doing their best to fill the demand for those needing an “I was there'’ T-shirt or sweatshirt.

“We set up shop Friday,'’ Dan Wilson said as Cheri folded a fresh batch of shirts emblazoned with “COLUMBIA COMPLEX 2006′’ logos on the back.

A former wildland firefighter, Dan said the couple travel to fires during the summer and set up their silk-screening equipment, contained in a travel trailer, to turn out commemorative shirts.

As of Monday, the Wilsons appeared to have the market to themselves. Unlike last year’s School Fire, no other competitors had yet appeared on the road leading into the camp.

T-Shirt Inscription Keeps Iraqi Man From Boarding Flight

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on August 30th, 2006

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY August 29, 2006 —An Iraqi architect says he was not allowed to board a Jet Blue flight at JFK because of the Arabic inscription on his t-shirt.

REPORTER: Raed Jarrar was wearing a T-shirt that read We Will Not Be Silent in Arabic and English, when he was approached by security officers. The officers said the Arabic script was upsetting other passengers, and told Jarrar to either turn the shirt inside out or wear something else. Jarrar protested but finally wore a T-shirt provided by a Jet Blue employee.

JARRAR: I grew up and spent all my life living under authoritarian regimes. and i know that these things happen. But I’m shocked that they happened to me here, in the U.S. Especially that I moved from Iraq because of the war that was waged in Iraq under titles like democracy and freedom.

T-Shirts for the Planet

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on August 26th, 2006

Earth friendly business markets style-oriented, organic threads

Wanda Combs
The Floyd Press

This local company shipped its first t-shirt only last November, and already it has made a big impression in stores across the country.

It’s more than a business for owners George and Rain Lipson. “We wanted to do organic cotton t-shirts with messages that would raise awareness about environmental, green and social issues,” he explains. Their Green Label Organic Sustainable Threads enterprise echoes that sentiment with the slogan - “Respect labor. Respect the planet. Respect yourself.”

“We’re very concerned about all of the manufacturing jobs going overseas…and not enough respect being left to the labor force here and the work they’re putting out,” says George.  And environmentally, the Lipsons are among those concerned about the use of pesticides in traditional cotton fields.

Green Label t-shirts are made with cotton that has been grown pesticide-free. The certified organic cotton shirts are also printed with REHANCE ® Apparel technology, a patented method of printing and low-impact garment dyeing that utilizes a water-based technology, rather than using harmful PVCs and phthalates.  And, all of the manufacturing is done “in a sweatshop free environment” in North Carolina. “Everything is made in the U.S.,” Lipson adds. “That’s part of our mission.”

The t-shirts have an added plus. He says, “The organic cotton is a long staple organic cotton so thus it has a very soft feel to it. You know how you have your favorite t-shirt you’ve washed 20 times. That’s how our’s feel.”

Controversial T-Shirts for Back-to-School

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on August 25th, 2006

Reporter: Justin Ware

Talk about making a fashion statement.

"That’s terrible," said Shelley Pederson, "that’s the worst shirt I think I’ve ever seen."

"Not cool," said Bob Conner.

"That’s kind of gross," said another passer-by.

"That’s like the best shirt for someone not to get a date," said Pederson.

The shirt they’re all talking about has the image of woman talking to a man, that man proceeding to push the woman off a ledge … and a caption summing it all up that reads, "problem solved."

You can buy that shirt, along with other apparel many are calling offensive, in the young men’s section at Kohl’s department stores.

"I think that’s a really bad thing to show, to sell to young kids," said Pederson. "And I know it’s all about freedom of speech and whatever, but that’s terrible to push that idea."

And according to doctor Janet Hyde, these shirts can be harmful.

Hyde says a number of people will pass off something that reads "silence is golden, duct tape is silver" as a joke.

But she says that joke, could lead to domestic violence.

Art to a ‘T’

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on August 24th, 2006

Artists find an entirely new canvas — on their shirts

BY FELICIA FEASTER

Now that architecture, design, skateboard decks and graffiti have moved into the gallery setting, are T-shirts the next quotidian objects about to have their day in the art world? On the evidence of a rash of Atlanta exhibitions and events devoted to T-shirt culture, it appears so.

After shows dedicated to green architecture and indie-rock posters, the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) is gearing up this October for an exhibition of T-shirt designs called To a T: T-Shirt Culture … Cute or Couture?. And both Yo Yo Gallery & Boutique and Young Blood Gallery prominently feature artist-made T-shirts in their gallery mix.

Also in October, the design team Sistahs of Harlem is releasing T-Shirt Makeovers: 20 Transformations for Fabulous Fashions (Glitterati Inc., 143 pages, $25), which features step-by-step instructions so that the less crafty can refashion their thrift store finds into street couture.

Recent articles in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times Magazine have documented the artist-designed T-shirt phenomenon. And a new Gap ad campaign has attempted to coast on the new "T-shirt equals individuality" indie sensibility by featuring their mass-market T-shirts "customized" by actors such as Aaron Eckhart and Jeremy Piven.

Gap Launches ‘T-Shirt Shop’ Ads

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on August 23rd, 2006

By Sandra O’Loughlin

NEW YORK — Gap T-shirts will soon be seen on the likes of Mia Farrow and Eva Herzigova as part of its latest print ad campaign, "T-shirt shop," which launches in September.

The black-and-white T-shirt ads will feature a diverse group of actors and personalities including actor Jeremy Piven, singer Natasha Bedingfield, and rapper Common. Creative shows each celebrity wearing a Gap T-shirt. Taglines such as "Your expression," "Your silence," or "Your attitude" attempt to convey a message of individuality.

The effort follows on the heels of a larger effort touting denim, "Jeans Take Shape," which launched mid-July. Laird + Partners, New York, created both campaigns.

The campaign is part of a strategy to position Gap as a one-stop shopping destination for T-shirts in all shapes and sizes. It also is a sorely needed effort to boost business.
