Brown Pride T-Shirt Creates School Controversy

SHAFTER - Five Shafter High School students have been stirring controversy for wearing t-shirts with the slogan "Brown Pride". But, the students say its freedom of speech.

The Principal of Shafter High School says any student wearing a t-shirt with any slogan deemed disruptive is subject to consequences for violating the dress code.

But, Jaime Garcia and Julio Escobedo say they see nothing wrong with wearing these brown pride t-shirts to school.

They say they decided among a group of friends that on Feb. 16 they would celebrate their Latino culture by wearing the shirts.

Shafter High School principle Jaime Quinonez says he fears the shirts could create a disruptive environment and the punishment would be the same if students wore a shirt saying white pride.

Garcia and Escobedo say they were both asked to remove the shirts, but they refused citing freedom of speech.

They say they’ve received positive feedback from their fellow classmates.

Student’s T-Shirt Biz Competes with City

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on February 27th, 2006

Deal will force student to turn 80 percent of profits over to city

By Dan Igo
February 27, 2006

When Brent Mittleman saw the city’s "I Heart College Park" T-shirts on sale at R.J. Bentley’s last year, he saw an opportunity.

Six months later, the shirts had disappeared and Mittleman began printing his own, identical to the city’s, to spread the "I Heart College Park love" - while making some money of his own.

"All my friends loved it and wanted one for themselves," said Mittleman, a senior economics major. "So many people were coming up to me about the shirts, I thought this would be huge."

But the city crushed those plans for now. Three weeks ago, a student working for College Park mayor Stephen Brayman told Mittleman he had to stop selling the shirts because the city had trademarked its prized "I Heart College Park" design, which made it illegal for him to make money from it.

Last week, Brayman and Mittleman agreed Mittleman could keep selling the shirts for $10 each, as long as he gave $8 of it to the city. A percentage will go to charities, including the Boys and Girls Club, and a city beautification project.

Brayman said "it’s a real win-win situation."

Mittleman agreed, though with less enthusiasm.

Building 19 Apologizes for T-Shirt Ad

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on February 23rd, 2006

Building 19 Apologizes for ‘Wife Beater’ T-Shirt Ad Featured in a Recent Flier

HINGHAM, Mass. Feb 23, 2006 (AP) - Discount retailer Building 19 has apologized for an advertisement in a recent flier that offered three "wife beater" undershirts for $5.98.

The tank-style T-shirts are called "wife beaters" because of a stereotype that physically abusive men wear them.

The ad, which appeared in a Feb. 19 flier, outraged women’s groups and led to a quick apology from Building 19 co-founder, Jerry Ellis, who took responsibility for the ad, the MetroWest Daily News of Framingham reported.

"The mistake was mine," Ellis told the paper. "I was either too dumb or too lazy or too distracted, and I let it go by. It certainly was insensitive . and I’m sorry it happened."

Ellis said the initial ad copy described the shirts as "A-shirts," but a man in advertising said, "Oh, no, you mean a wife beater shirt."

"I saw it and . I questioned it, and (the male employee) said that’s what everybody calls it," Ellis said.

T-Shirt Charity Donates T-Shirts to Make a Difference

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on February 21st, 2006

February 21, 2006

T-Shirt Charity, a t-shirt and promotional printing company that is dedicated to helping homeless and needy people, is selling t-shirts that make a difference.

T-Shirt Charity offers high-quality originally designed t-shirts, apparel, hats, mugs and more. Every time T-Shirt Charity sells one they give one away to a homeless or needy individual. By making monthly trips to local shelters or shipping the shirts out to shelters nationwide, it strives to touch as many needy people as possible.

Steve McKillip, founder of T-Shirt Charity, said, "A t-shirt may not seem like much, but it can really make someone’s day, and bring comfort to a person who might not have more than the old clothes on their back."

The company has a large variety of styles and products, from regular t- shirts to hoodies and girls’ styles. Its newest line of apparel, called ‘wise words t-shirts,’ is a line of t-shirts, sweatshirts and girls’ tees with positive and thought-provoking quotes on them.

The company has the philosophy that if you are going to spend your money on a t-shirt why not make it count - why not let some good come of it. The other main focus at T-Shirt Charity is helping non-profit organizations.

Mohammed Cartoon T-Shirt Maker Gets Hate Mail

Posted in T-Shirts in the News on February 21st, 2006

Is it blood money? Or supporting freedom of expression? Conservative t-shirt maker MetroSpy is selling shirts depicting a caricature of the prophet Mohammed with a bomb wrapped in his turban.

Is it blood money? Or supporting freedom of expression?

Coinciding with the Cartoon Wars, conservative t-shirt maker MetroSpy is now selling shirts depicting a caricature of the prophet Mohammed with a bomb wrapped in his turban. Some critics claim that MetroSpy is merely trying to profit from the ongoing rioting and violence as a result of the publication of the Mohammed cartoons - prompting some to voice their displeasure by sending the company hate-filled email, online viruses and even death threats.

Johnathan Alexander, MetroSpy’s production manager, begs to differ, and says he’s never seen anything like it.

He also unrepentant.

"It’s a silly little cartoon. We’ve sold designs far more offensive than this for years", says Alexander, referring to a t shirt which reads, "My Jesus can beat up your Allah."

Despite protests over their offending design, MetroSpy’s Alexander says they plan to continue selling the t-shirts.

Still, as a precautionary measure he has increased the company’s security, sought the advice of a private investigative agency and says they will remain in close contact with federal and local authorities.

"For people to become so enraged over a drawing that they resort to burning down buildings and threatening to kill people is something I’ll never understand," Alexander says.

A STUDENT being asked to remove a T-shirt with a lesbian slogan has sparked a protest at a school in Melbourne’s northwest.

About 30 students at Strathmore Secondary College last week rallied behind Year 12 classmate Stephanie, 17, after she was told by teachers to change out of the T-shirt for school photos.

Stephanie, who did not want her surname published, said she had worn a T-shirt bearing the slogan "Nobody knows I’m a lesbian" to school on several occasions without concerns being raised by staff or fellow students.

"I’ve had it for ages," she said.

But she said things changed when she wore it on school photo day, sparking concern among Year 12 co-ordinators.

She was quickly asked to take the T-shirt off.
