What men wear that makes women cringe

When my husband and I had only been dating a few weeks, he picked me up at my apartment wearing the most awful shirt I have ever seen.
It’s hard to even describe it — it was a long sleeved, gray T-shirt with a plaid patch-like thing on the front, so that when the shirt was worn under a jacket, it “looked” like a nice shirt.
It was not worn under a jacket, but I’m not sure that would have saved it.
I tried to drop hints I thought were obvious. “That shirt is really different,” I said.
I know now he doesn’t respond to hints.
When he finally got fed up with my distant stares and standoffish behavior, he asked me what was wrong.
“I really hate your shirt,” I finally confessed.
