This local company shipped its first t-shirt only last November, and already it has made a big impression in stores across the country.
It’s more than a business for owners George and Rain Lipson. “We wanted to do organic cotton t-shirts with messages that would raise awareness about environmental, green and social issues,” he explains. Their Green Label Organic Sustainable Threads enterprise echoes that sentiment with the slogan - “Respect labor. Respect the planet. Respect yourself.”
“We’re very concerned about all of the manufacturing jobs going overseas…and not enough respect being left to the labor force here and the work they’re putting out,” says George. And environmentally, the Lipsons are among those concerned about the use of pesticides in traditional cotton fields.
Green Label t-shirts are made with cotton that has been grown pesticide-free. The certified organic cotton shirts are also printed with REHANCE ® Apparel technology, a patented method of printing and low-impact garment dyeing that utilizes a water-based technology, rather than using harmful PVCs and phthalates. And, all of the manufacturing is done “in a sweatshop free environment” in North Carolina. “Everything is made in the U.S.,” Lipson adds. “That’s part of our mission.”
The t-shirts have an added plus. He says, “The organic cotton is a long staple organic cotton so thus it has a very soft feel to it. You know how you have your favorite t-shirt you’ve washed 20 times. That’s how our’s feel.”
